Third season of American Idol finalist 2004 and Oscar, Grammy-winning singer Jennifer Hudson said that she could have been a victim in the gruesome murder and credited her friend David Otunga for saving her life on the day her mother, brother and nephew were murdered.
On Oct. 24, 2008, Hudson's 57-year-old mother, Darnell Donnerson, and 29-year-old brother, Jason Hudson, were found shot to death inside the Chicago home Donnerson shared with the singer's older sister, Julia. Julia's son, seven-year-old Julian, was reported missing after the crime and was found dead three days later. Julia's estranged husband, William Balfour, has been charged with the murders.
Hudson said in an interview for the December/January issue of Ebony, "I could have been home with my mom then." "I flew out to see him; that's why I'm still here." Hudson said that her fiancé, David Otunga, kept her out of Chicago by asking her to visit him in Florida in October 2008, when he was participating in an event for World Wrestling Entertainment. It was during that time that the tragic gory incident happened.
The 30-year-old singer got engaged to WWE wrestler and Harvard Law School graduate David Otunga, 31, in September 2008, the couple has yet to announce a wedding date and welcomed their son David Daniel Otunga Jr. on August 10, 2009. She is now filming "The Three Stooges" which will be released in 2012.
